Greens maintenance - Graden sand injection system (16th & 17th September 2015)

The number one problem on most greens throughout Europe if not the world, is the organic matter content in the top 40mm. The greens at Pike Hills are no different, as was highlighted by the STRI Report commissioned by the Golf Club earlier this year.

Getting over a tonne of sand into a green using a pedestrian Graden with a sand hopper calls for a lot of work. With sufficient Staff on the job a green can be treated and back in play in less than one hour. The system firms up the greens and has many benefits in reducing the problems associated with the build-up of thatch (organic matter).

One pass with Graden firms the greens as much as three hollow core passes.

Dr Ruth Mann BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, MBPR of the STRI conducted Organic Matter Control Trials throughout 2009 and 2010. These were conducted over 90 replica trial plots upon which all forms of aeration were carried out to include hollow tining, micro tining and the use of the Graden Sand Injection system. The results showed the Graden Sand Injection system was most effective and reduced the organic matter in the top 25mm of the test plot turf by 60%.

The Graden machine used on the greens to remove the thatch and fill the groves with seed and sand. We put 20 tonnes on all the greens. Hopefully we should see some germination in 2-3 weeks.

Clearing the greens after the Graden has been through. We used our groundsman core collector, which cleared most of it in one pass.

George and our French student Benjamin shovelling the rubbish up.

They will be cut in the dry to pick up the anything left on the greens.

STRI Report 2015
Earlier this year we commissioned STRI to undertake analysis of the course looking primarily at our greens. The full report can be read here:

STRI REPORT

The STRI Report form April of this year (2015) focussed on our greens and identified thatch as a primary concern.

Thatch is excessive organic matter accumulation reducing surface drainage and root development, resulting in unhealthy turf and poor playing performance.

The recommended most appropriate method of renovating the greens early in the season includes a combination of verticutting, solid tining, micro hollow tining, top dressing and overseeding.

The importance of applying sufficient levels of sand top dressing to the greens throughout the year were highlighted during the visit; with the aim to help dilute organic matter and smooth out/speed-up the surfaces. A significant increase in sand top dressing levels is strongly recommended moving forward and our aims should be to apply a minimum total of 120 tonnes this year.

Members will hopefully be understanding that a little short term pain caused by regular tining and top dressing will lead to longer term gain with improved playability for more of the year.

IRRIGATION

Earlier this year we invested in adding this system to our irrigation.

The recent STRI report from April this year stated:
“Water analysis of the irrigation water was carried out and found calcium carbonate content to be higher than desirable. This therefore supports the Club’s recent installation of the Quadrop injection system to help to improve water quality.”

Applying the correct amount of water to greens is important to encourage the desirable grass types to thrive more than the undesirable types. This system will improve the effectiveness of our irrigation programme by applying better quality water to our greens.
